Freshman year of high school was where I began to dislike writing, because of a teacher. I sat in the desk tapping my fingers on the top of my binder dreading the next assignment. The teacher that everyone disliked walked in as the bell chimed. The reason why everyone disliked her was because of the bland teaching style. "Today class you are going to write about any career that you like," Mrs. Benefield said, as she pushed a cart of books about careers in front of the class. "You will not however write about any career that includes any kind of athlete, musician, or actor,” she added. One student, that was passionate about sports, shouted "Why not?!" Mrs. Benefield explained that those careers did not count as real jobs. I cringed, because I originally was going to write about being a musician. I was forced to choose writing about being a theater teacher. I did not enjoy writing the paper at all. |
My senior year of high school was my favorite year with a teacher that I liked, and who taught me a new way to write. The reason I liked Mr. Harrington, is because he was a fun teacher. The class was alive with the sound of music. As the bell chimed the music faded, Mr. Harrington stood behind his podium. "Today class we will be doing our end of the year writing assignment." The class groaned in annoyance. He passed out the template for the assignment. The class began by choosing a topic from a list. I chose the topic gays should have the same rights as others. We began writing the body paragraphs first. One student asked why we would do that. Mr. Harrington excitedly explained that most people have no clue what to write when starting with the introduction. The class did research on their topic to get the thesis, supporting details, and transitions. After the research was done, we went on to the introduction and conclusion paragraphs. With the help of Mr. Harrington, the class learned how to write a proper paper for any situation. I enjoyed the process, it was a lot simpler than just starting to write.

In conclusion, even though I've had horrible experiences with writing in school. I have learned to like it. I have had bad teachers as well as bad writing topics on standardized tests that made me hate writing. I did have some good experiences with writing that made me see a new way of writing that I liked.
